Laine Retreat – Portugal 2017
Right from the beginning, we knew that we wanted to organize gatherings and knitting retreats around the world, to explore life's beauty with other like-minded souls. To inspire and to get inspired, to get together and to create and share meaningful moments – that's what it's all about. We hope that Laine will not only be a magazine but a whole community.
With the weather getting colder day by day and nature preparing for yet another long Nordic winter, we find our thoughts wander back to the wonderful time we had together with fellow knitters at our first Laine Retreat in the picturesque Portuguese Alentejo region last spring. Together with our dear friend Joji Locatelli and our chef Mina Park, we welcomed 8 guests at Cabeça da Cabra Guesthouse, a former rural primary school which the owner Maria together with her partner Duarte turned into a charming guesthouse a couple of years ago. Although we travelled to Portugal from different parts of the world, such as France, Sweden, Finland, Germany and the UK, we all longed for the same thing – for a couple of laid-back days filled with lots of time for knitting, laying in the warm Portuguese sun, delicious food & refreshing drinks and friendly faces.
Thanks to our chef Mina who drove to the farmers' market and butcher each morning, we were served a variety of delicious food freshly made of local ingredients every single day. Those long nights spent around the long wooden dinner table in the airy dining room knitting, chatting long into the night and enjoying life will be cherished forever. Unforgettable will also be Lucky, Maria's sweet dog who was almost as much into yarn as we. Oh and the coastline with its mighty waves crashing against the high cliffs and the many surfers riding the most perfect waves... We were also very fortunate that Vânia O. of TWO HANDS Textile Studio hosted a full-day weaving workshop – we were inspired not only by colours and textures but also by Vânia's passion and enthusiasm towards this craft.
Thank you to all our lovely participants for making these days so very special: Tiina, Aimée, Mari, Marion, Steffi, Helen, Lisa and Daniça. Thank you Maria for opening your beautiful home to us. Thank you Joji for designing a sweater, I See Spring, especially for the retreat and for joining us on this adventure. Thank you Mina for feeding us well and being such a sunshine all the time. Thank you sweet Vânia for sharing your knowledge – we will sure meet again. A huge thank you also to our awesome sponsors: Lapuan Kankurit, Retrosaria Rosa Pomar, not PERFECT LINEN, Madára & Natural Good Company for the goodie bags and 8ª Colina for the most amazing Portuguese craft beer.
